Funding abortion alternatives
Joe Pojman, executive director of the anti-abortion group Texas Alliance for Life, is unimpressed by the fundraising totals touted by abortion funds, both in and out of Texas, when compared to the amount spent on programs that advocate against abortion, he said.

Amy O’Donnell from the Texas Alliance for Life Communications said the timing of the law fits with the first anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
“Texas recognizes that we have to do more because there will be even more births in our state as we’ve seen,” O’Donnell said.

The other two laws set to go into effect are designed to support students who may be pregnant or have children.
Senate Bill 412 enshrines federal protections for pregnant and parenting students, while Senate Bill 459 gives parenting college students priority class registration. The bills allow students to take the time off needed for pregnancy or childbirth without discrimination.
“What we like about these bills is that it sets the table for an understanding that students who are parents face different responsibilities,” said Amy O’Donnell of Texas Alliance for Life to the Texas Tribune in May. “They have different weights on them, they have different pressures on them. They have to navigate different things than a student who is not a parent and there needs to be accommodations for them. There needs to be resources.”

But in an August 2022 letter to the Texas Medical Board, he said he was aware of complaints that hospitals “may be wrongfully prohibiting or seriously delaying” life-saving care to patients with pregnancy complications. He pointed to “confusion or disregard” of state laws allowing for abortion in medical emergencies, and said the issues must be corrected.
Amy O’Donnell, spokeswoman for the anti-abortion Texas Alliance for Life, said that clarification needs to come from the Texas Medical Board – not the Legislature.
“For any physicians who are perhaps … confused on our clear pro-life laws, I would just encourage them to also reach out and see if they can get that clarification,” she said.
