AUSTIN, TX — Yesterday the Austin City Council voted to appropriate $100,000 to fund abortion access, according to the “Immediate Community Investments and Re-imagining Plan.” This $100,000 is in addition to the $150,000 allotted in last year’s budget but not spent. This proposal works around the law passed by the Texas Legislature and signed by Gov. Abbott in 2019 to prohibit contracts between municipalities and abortion providers and their affiliates.
The following statement is attributed to our Executive Director Dr. Joe Pojman:
The City of Austin continues to brashly work around the state law passed in 2019, banning contracts between government entities and abortion providers and their affiliates. This blatant disregard for the intent of the Legislature and the Governor shows how detached this Council is from the vast majority of our taxpayers who do not want their tax dollars funding abortion in any way, shape, or form.
We find it unfortunate that the Council neglects to fund local agencies that provide compassionate alternatives to abortion, including adoption. With more than a dozen life-affirming agencies located within the Austin City limits, this is a missed opportunity to offer a true choice to pregnant women. No woman should feel compelled to seek abortion because she is not aware of the many agencies that provide alternatives.
