Leadership Circle Luncheon with U.S. Senator John Cornyn on Friday, April 1, in Austin to be Streamed Live
We are very honored that U.S. Senator John Cornyn will be our featured speaker at our quarterly Leadership Circle luncheon on Friday, April, 1.
For anyone who cannot attend, this event will be streamed live for viewing on computers and mobile devices. The streaming will be available from 11:45 AM to 1 PM, with Senator Cornyn’s talk beginning at 12:15 PM. Visit TexasAllianceforLife.org.
Senator Cornyn is the senior senator from Texas and is the Senate Majority Whip. His efforts were critical to the successful passage of the Pro-Life Reconciliation Bill, H.R. 3762, last December, which is the first time Congress defunded Planned Parenthood. Senator Cornyn formerly served at the Attorney General of Texas, and before that he served in the Texas Supreme Court.
Current and potential Leadership Circle members and their guests are welcome to attend. The Leadership Circle is a special way for individuals, businesses, and churches to support the life-saving work of Texas Alliance for Life by donating $1,000 or more per year. Supreme Court Challenge to HB 2
Immediately after the elections, Texas Alliance for Life’s staff traveled to Washington, D.C., for the the the challenge to the pro-life HB 2 in the U.S. Supreme Court. The Texas Legislature passed HB 2 in 2013 to substantially increase safety standards at Texas’ abortion facilities. The new standards meet the standard of care for facilities that provide similar procedures.Texas Alliance for Life provided a great deal of legal help to the Texas Attorney General, including filing an amicus curiae (“friend-of-the-court”) brief, written by the former solicitor general of Texas. Many facilities have chosen to close rather than meet the safety standards, which opponents claim prevents women from exercising their right to abortion. However, those claims are greatly exaggerated, which we proved in our brief.
Additionally, Dr. Joe Pojman, Texas Alliance for Life’s executive director, spoke at the pro-life rally in front the the Supreme Court building and fielded a number of calls from the media.
The Court is expected to issue a decision by the end of June.
Primary Election Results
Candidates endorsed by Texas Alliance for Life PAC generally had a very good day on the Primary Election Day, March 1. Our PAC endorsed in 36 contested state House races, of which 25 won their elections and three are in run-offs, meaning so far we are batting 75%. Among the most watched were House District 121 in which pro-life Speaker Joe Straus easily won re-election against heavy-funded opponents and House District 8 in which Byron Cook, the pro-life chairman of the House State Affairs Committee, defeated a challenger who outspent him 3-1.
We endorsed in two contested state Senate races. One won and the other is in a runoff.
All of our endorsed candidates running for Congress were successful.
