OLD TAL LOGO

Austin, Texas — Delegates at the 2026 Republican Party of Texas Convention voted to include language among the top eight legislative priorities that will open the door to criminal penalties for women who obtain abortions, including the possibility of life in prison or even the death penalty.

Texas Alliance for Life is deeply disappointed by this outcome.

Our position has not changed. We oppose the criminalization of women. We believe Texas law should hold illegal abortion providers and traffickers accountable, not punish the vulnerable women they exploit. A woman facing fear, coercion, confusion, or desperation needs compassion, truth, and practical help and direction, not the threat of prison.

For nearly four decades, Texas Alliance for Life has worked to advance a pro-life strategy that is principled, compassionate, and effective. That work has helped pass nearly 60 pro-life laws, ending elective abortion in Texas, and securing hundreds of millions of dollars for pregnancy centers, maternity homes, adoption agencies, and life-affirming alternatives.

That is the path that has saved lives. That is the path we will continue to defend.

The 90th Legislative Session will be a critical moment for the pro-life movement in Texas. We will work to ensure that Texas remains firmly committed to protecting unborn children while also protecting women from prosecution and connecting them with the care and support they need.

This fight is not over. Texas babies and women deserve better, and Texas Alliance for Life will continue working to make sure they get it.
