Current abortion laws in Texas have an exception for cases when the pregnancy causes a “life threatening physical condition” that “places the female at risk of death or poses a serious risk of substantial impairment of a major bodily function.” That exception is included in HB 1280, the Human Life Protection Act, which the Legislature passed in 2021 and went into effect in August 2022.
During the current session, 10 bills have been introduced to expand that exception for a variety of reasons. This news conference addresses the status of those bills and whether the further exceptions are needed.
