Texas Primary Elections begin in a week
Tuesday, March 4, 2008, is the Primary Election Day in Texas, when voters in the Democratic and Republican Parties pick nominees to be on the ballot for the General Election in November. Early Voting takes place from Tuesday, February 19, through Friday, February 29. Any registered voter can vote in either party's election.

Texas Alliance for Life will have a Voters Guide available on our website at www.texasallianceforlife.org.

Also, you can vote twice on Election Day March 4 by attending the Democratic or Republican Party's precinct convention after 7 p.m. That is how you can get involved in building the Parties' platforms and pick delegates for the district and county conventions on March 29. Click here for a helpful flier that explains the precinct convention process.

While the races for the presidential nominee garnering most of the media attention, there are numerous other races of enormous importance, including U.S. Senate, U.S. Representative, Texas Supreme Court, Court of Criminal Appeals, and Senate and House seats in the Texas Legislature.

Stem Cell Update -- Dewhurst charges panel with adult stem cell hearing; testimony needed

In a victory for advocates of pro-life, life-saving adult stem cell research, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst has directed the powerful Senate Health and Human Services Committee to assess the current state of adult stem cell research in Texas and the potential for more cures and economic benefits. Dewhurst issued a list of charges to his committees that included the following:

Monitor the collection and availability of cord blood stem cells for treatments and research in Texas. Review the current state of basic and clinical research using these and other types of adult stem cells. Assess the potential for clinical and economic benefits from current and increased adult stem cell research.

"We applaud Lt. Gov. Dewhurst for taking this giant step to promote adult stem cell research, which has demonstrated tremendous success in treating thousands of people with debilitating and deadly diseases without destroying a single human embryo," said TAL executive director Joe Pojman, Ph.D.

Dewhurst joins House Speaker Tom Craddick who issued a similar charge in November to the House Appropriations Committee. No dates have been released for either committee to conduct its hearings.

Testimony needed: If you or anyone you know has been treated using adult stem cells, please contact us at info@texasallianceforlife.org. We want to make sure all researchers and patients have an opportunity to testify at the hearing.

Update on upcoming U.S. Senate vote on tax-funded abortions

During February, the U.S. Senate will take up S. 1200, a bill that would make certain changes to American Indian health programs.  Pro-life organizations, including Texas Alliance for Life, support an amendment that will be offered by pro-life Senator David Vitter (R-LA.) to permanently prohibit the federal Indian Health Service from providing abortions (except to save the life of the mother, or in cases of rape, or incest of a minor).

Please immediately ask U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison to support this amendment. (See sample message below.)

Some years ago, this federal program was paying for abortion on demand.  This practice was curbed, but it might resume again under some future president, unless Congress adds suitable language to S. 1200.

This vote on S. 1200 was expected on January 22, but after some discussion that day, no votes on S. 1200 were taken. Debate is now expected in February.

U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison -- Washington, D.C., office -- 202-224-5922.

"Hello, my name is  (name) . I live at  (address) . Please ask Senator Hutchison to SUPPORT the Vitter Amendment to S. 1200 to prevent tax funding for abortion on demand in the Indian Health Service reauthorization bill. Thank you."

Senator Hutchison scored 83% on votes on life issues during 2007
as scored by the National Right to Life Committee. She is on record supporting Roe v. Wade as appropriate and that it should not be overturned.
In 2003, Senator Hutchison voted to support the following amendment to the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act (the amendment was later dropped):

SENSE OF THE SENATE CONCERNING ROE V. WADE.

    (a) FINDINGS.--The Senate finds that--

    (1) abortion has been a legal and constitutionally protected medical procedure throughout the United States since the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade (410 U.S. 113 (1973)); and

    (2) the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade established constitutionally based limits on the power of States to restrict the right of a woman to choose to terminate a pregnancy.

    (b) SENSE OF THE SENATE.--It is the sense of the Senate that--

    (1) the decision of the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade (410 U.S. 113 (1973)) was appropriate and secures an important constitutional right; and

    (2) such decision should not be overturned.

Senator John Cornyn scored 100% on votes on life issues during 2007 as scored by the National Right to Life Committee. He is on record opposing Roe v. Wade.
