Stem Cell Update -- Speaker Craddick wisely promotes adult stem cell research and treatments.

The Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, Tom Craddick, recently took a giant step to advance life-saving adult stem cell research (a pro-life alternative to embryo-destructive research). The Speaker directed the powerful House Appropriations Committee to

Assess the potential for clinical and economic benefits of the use of state funds for current and increased adult stem cell research. Report on the collection and availability of cord blood stem cells for treatments and research in Texas. Review the current state of basic and clinical research using available types of adult stem cells.

The Speaker issued the directive in the biannual Interim Study Charges, given to House committees between legislative sessions. No schedule has been released for when the Committee will conduct the hearing.

"We applaud Speaker Craddick," said TAL executive director Joe Pojman, Ph.D. "He understands the ability of adult stem cells to heal patients today and the tremendous potential for adult stem cell research to bring tremendous medical and economic benefits to Texas in the foreseeable future."

If you know of adult stem cell research or treatments in Texas or have been treated using adult stem cells, please contact us at info@texasallianceforlife.org. We want to make sure all researchers and patients have an opportunity to testify at the hearing.

Congressman Henry Hyde's life shows the importance of electing pro-life officials.
On Thursday, October 29, former Illinois Congressman Henry J. Hyde died at the age of 83. His death is mourned by millions. Congressman Hyde's 30-year career in public life is a testament to the importance of electing pro-life men and women to public office and to the effectiveness of incremental pro-life legislation. As a freshman congressman in 1976, Hyde authored the bill that bears his name, the Hyde Amendment, which incrementally prevents abortion by limiting federal tax dollars for abortion-on-demand. Because of the Hyde Amendment, Texas taxpayers have not paid for abortions for three decades. Though not overturning Roe v. Wade outright, the Hyde Amendment has saved the lives of 1-2 million unborn babies, according to National Right to Life, protected countless women from the tragedy of their first and possibly repeat abortions, and prevented taxpayers from having to participate in the grisly killing. Without Henry Hyde and other elected officials like him in Congress, none of this would have happened.

"Voters of Illinois gave us a rare gift by repeatedly sending Congressman Hyde to Washington," said Christopher Maska, chair of TAL's Public Policy Committee. "We voters in Texas have an awesome responsibility to follow their example with our votes for pro-life candidates."
